Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels) – Arcade Fire
I thought I was gonna be saving this song for when I couldn’t think of anything else to write about, but, I’ve been listening to this on repeat in my car for the past two days, and just had to give in. This song is most definitely on my list of Songs I Could Listen To On Repeat And Not Get Tired Of Them.
Remember when I said, in response to James’ first Arcade Fire post, that I thought that the song “Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)” was the stand out hit from Funeral? Well, I stand by that claim.
And remember when I mentioned some of the things in songs that really make them “explode in my brain” (to borrow from my illustrious cohort)? Well, this song contains a piano part that is absolutely stunning, and towards the last minute and a half, another thing to add to my list of “brain exploding” items: choirs. Specifically, choral voices.
There are few songs I can remember where I was and what I was doing when I first heard them. “Tunnels” is one of them. It was 2005, I had just started my first (and current) job out of college, and my tastes in music were slowly evolving (thanks to Pandora). When I happened upon the song Tunnels, and subsequently the band Arcade Fire, I was floored. My mind exploded. They really were *that* amazing.
And as James mentioned, seeing them live last year at the Austin City Limits festival was the culmination of nearly two years worth of buildup. They were every bit as engrossing and electric as I wanted them to be, and more.
The video? Well, this version on YouTube is definitely strange, and honestly, doesn’t do the song justice. If you really want a treat, seek out the version you have to (unfortunately) pay for on iTunes. It’s *much* better.
Enjoy.
