Bitter Heart – Zee Avi
A challenge in crafting a fine Music Blur post is finding an appropriate video on YouTube. Sometimes the really local, really obscure bands are hard to find. In honor of that, I am writing today about Zee Avi who was discovered on YouTube. I heard about her recently on NPR’s Here and Now, she was promoting her new self titled CD. The story goes one of her friends couldn’t come to a show, so she put her performance on You Tube. Some people took notice and now she has a record deal with Brushfire Records. I am sure there is more to it, but this is not a post on the ins and outs of the record business.
As soon as I heard the music I thought I had to share. It’s simple and sweet, just her beautiful voice and an acoustic guitar. Her voice reminds me of a Zooey Deschanel, from She & Him. Another fun song is “Kantoi,” meaning “busted” in Malaysian. It’s sung in English and Malaysian, and with the addition of a ukulele; the song has a very “island indie-pop” feel. Worth a listen!

Man, she does really remind me a lot of She & Him. Crazy how she was discovered via YouTube – I’ve definitely never heard of her (knowingly), but she’s good.
Plus, any artist that uses ukulele is okay in my book.
